What Is Keyword Research and Why Does It Matter?

Keyword research is the process of finding the exact words and phrases people type into Google when they're looking for information, products, or services in your niche. It's the foundation of SEO because if you're not targeting the right keywords, you're creating content that nobody is searching for.

Great keyword research tells you: what your audience wants to know, how competitive each topic is, and which keywords you can realistically rank for given your site's current authority.

The Three Dimensions of a Keyword

Every keyword has three key characteristics you need to evaluate:

1. Search Volume

How many times per month is this keyword searched? Higher volume means more potential traffic, but also more competition. For new sites, focus on keywords with 100-2,000 monthly searches. These are specific enough to be achievable but still worth targeting.

2. Keyword Difficulty

How hard is it to rank for this keyword? Difficulty scores (0-100) estimate how strong the competing pages are. New sites should target keywords with difficulty scores under 20-25. Established sites can go after harder keywords.

3. Search Intent

What does the searcher actually want? There are four types of search intent:

  • Informational — they want to learn something ("how to do X", "what is X")
  • Navigational — they're looking for a specific site ("Facebook login")
  • Commercial — they're researching before buying ("best X", "X review")
  • Transactional — they're ready to buy ("buy X", "X price")

Match your content type to the search intent. If someone searches "best SEO tools", they want a comparison article — not a product page.

The Keyword Research Process

Step 1: Brainstorm Seed Keywords

Start with broad topics related to your niche. If you run a WordPress SEO blog, your seed keywords might be: WordPress SEO, SEO plugins, keyword research, link building, page speed. These aren't the keywords you'll target — they're starting points for finding specific opportunities.

Step 2: Expand With a Keyword Tool

Enter your seed keywords into a keyword research tool. We recommend Mangools KWFinder for its accuracy and ease of use. The tool will generate hundreds of related keywords with search volume and difficulty data.

Step 3: Filter for Opportunity

Apply these filters to find your best opportunities:

  • Search volume: 100-5,000/month (sweet spot for new sites)
  • Keyword difficulty: under 25
  • Exclude branded terms (competitor names)

Step 4: Analyze the SERP

Before targeting any keyword, look at the actual search results. Ask yourself:

  • Are the top results from major brands and authority sites, or smaller blogs?
  • How long are the top-ranking articles?
  • What angle do they take?
  • Is there a featured snippet? Can you win it?
  • Are there ads? (Ads indicate commercial value)

If the SERP is dominated by Wikipedia, Forbes, and major brands, move on. If you see smaller blogs and forum posts, you have a real chance.

Types of Keywords to Target

Long-Tail Keywords — Your Best Friend as a New Site

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases with lower search volume but also lower competition. "best WordPress SEO plugin for beginners" is a long-tail version of "WordPress SEO plugin". Long-tail keywords are easier to rank for and often convert better because the searcher has a very specific intent.

Question Keywords

Questions are goldmines for new sites. "How do I add schema markup to WordPress?" is a question keyword that's specific, has clear intent, and is often less competitive than shorter phrases. Use AnswerThePublic or the "People Also Ask" section in Google to find question keywords.

Comparison Keywords

"Rank Math vs Yoast", "Semrush vs Mangools", "WordPress vs Squarespace" — comparison keywords have strong commercial intent and are perfect for affiliate content. People searching these are actively researching before making a decision.

Building Your Keyword List

Organize your keywords into topic clusters. Group related keywords together and plan one piece of content to target each cluster. Don't create separate posts for every keyword variation — target multiple related keywords with one comprehensive post.

A good keyword list for a new site has:

  • 3-5 pillar topics (broader, higher-volume, target these as your site grows)
  • 20-50 cluster keywords (specific, low-competition, target these first)
  • A mix of informational and commercial intent

Common Keyword Research Mistakes

  • Targeting keywords that are too competitive — you'll never rank for "SEO" as a new site
  • Ignoring search intent — writing a blog post for a transactional keyword won't rank
  • Keyword stuffing — using your keyword 50 times in a post hurts more than it helps
  • Targeting only high-volume keywords — low-volume, low-competition keywords can drive significant traffic at scale
  • Not updating your keyword research — search trends change; review your strategy every 6 months

Keyword research is a skill that improves with practice. The more SERPs you analyze and the more content you publish, the better your instincts become for spotting opportunities. Start with the process above, be consistent, and the rankings will follow.
